Pre-K Project Work and Exploration

U.S Fish and Wildlife School Yard Habitat Project

Picture
Maps for our U.S Fish and Wildlife School Yard Habitat Project.

We have recently purchased animal print molds as part of our schoolyard habitat grant project.  The children have created a map of their outdoor classroom and have begun to place the animals according to where they would live along our trail.

Children's comments while working...

"The rabbit will want to be in the garden eating all the carrots."

"The fox likes dens and will want to make one under the bridge."

"We should put the crow up by our snack area because they like trash and our bagels."

The children began work on January 23rd with Mike Glenn, U.S. Fish and Wildlife biologist, and their teachers to mold the prints and start plans for placement of the prints along the their trail.

Habitats- Children are beginning to observe and document the animals in their outdoor classroom.
Here are a few of the things they are looking at:
  • Location- paying close attention to the surrounding environment and making predictions regarding food the animal may eat as well as where it may live.
  • Quantity- Children will begin to understand tally marks and record the number of each animal they see.
  • Time of day - document in order to understand the time of day particular animals are most active.
